What Not to Buy

"Why you shouldn't buy a T-shirt in a language you don't understand."

which translates as "I'm a stupid American."

This same idea works nicely for other related things like "why you shouldn't get a tattoo in a language you don't understand."

I guess it would be funny to wear it if you do speak the language, but I'm not sure anyone would get the irony.

Paul Frank: a cool designer you shouldn't trust to not make you look really, really stupid.

ha! definitely true. i saw some woman the other day with "kita" (north) tattooed on her arm and i couldn't help but think that she had no idea what it meant.

In a way this is like some sort of weird revenge thing....i mean after all, Japan is king of the "I'm going to wear this t-shirt with English on it even though I can't understand it idea"....you know, the teenage girl with a t-shirt that says "fist me" on the back, or the student at my eikaiwa who continues to wear this t-shirt that features "CUM" in big green all caps letters....we haven't quite figured out a way to tell her about it other than to ask obliquely, "uh, do you know what that word means?"
